State the scope in pieces, not in vibes

Open the proposal with a specific scope: '6 pages of website copy (Home, About, Services, Pricing, FAQ, Contact), approximately 400–600 words per page, delivered as a Google Doc.' Or: 'A 5-email welcome sequence, each 150–250 words, delivered as plain text in a Google Doc.' Vague scope ('website copy', 'an email sequence') leaves room for the client to imagine 12 pages and you to plan for 5 — and that gap is where every copywriting engagement goes wrong. Specific scope at the proposal stage prevents the dispute three weeks in.

Show the process briefly, the deliverables clearly

Most clients don't need to know your detailed creative process — they need to know what they're getting and when. Compress process into a single tight paragraph (brief → research → draft → revisions → delivery) and spend the real page space on a deliverables table: what they get, when they get it, what format it's in. The proposals that close are the ones where the client can answer 'what am I buying?' from a single glance at the deliverables section.

Quote the revision policy as a feature, not a restriction

Frame the revision policy as a service guarantee: 'Two rounds of revisions are included at no additional cost. Most copywriters charge for any revision beyond a single round — I include two because writing improves with one rewrite cycle, and that's worth doing right.' This positions the cap as generous rather than restrictive. The clients who immediately push for unlimited revisions are pre-qualifying themselves as the wrong fit; the rest accept the policy and the engagement starts with clear expectations.

  • State revision rounds clearly: 'Includes 2 rounds of revisions'
